Highlights

  • Highly significant gold anomalism on a regional scale
  • Extensive areas of historic workings
  • The extensive development of hydrothermal breccias together with stockwork veined intrusions indicated potential for significant gold mineralised systems
  • Minimal past drilling

Alluvial gold mining has been carried out in the Longwood area with reported production in excess of 100,000 oz gold during the 1880’s. Little is known of the quantum of hard rock production, however there are extensive areas of historic hard rock workings throughout the Longwood area.

Tasman will explore an argillic alteration zone at least 5km wide that exhibits good potential for a major gold discovery over a strike length of 14kms. Two main areas of gold anomalism have attracted Tasman’s interest, namely the East Longwood and Merrivale goldfields.

Within the East Longwood goldfield large scale hydrothermal intrusive breccias exist in proximity to stream sediment gold anomalism, shear zones, and stockwork veining and disseminated sulphide mineralisation in country rock.

At Merrivale NNE/SSW striking, moderately NW dipping quartz vein/stockwork mineralisation is hosted by quartz-sericite-pyrite altered Permian diorite/granodiorite of the Longwood igneous complex. Trench channel sampling has returned 1.2m @ 12.4 g/t gold across vein plus wallrock material. Soil sampling has identified a gold anomaly (up to 357 ppb gold) of approximately 800m x 300m which is open at both ends. No drilling has occurred at Merrivale despite the favourable results from previous exploration.

  • Rock chip results from within Tasman’s areas of interest have ranged up to 130g/t and a number of stream sediment samples have been greater than 2.5g/t from the two anomalous areas.
  • Of 155 rock chips taken, 8 ranged between 11.2 g/t to 72.5 g/t gold, 8 ranged between 2.93g/t to 9.28g/t gold, 7 ranged between 1.05g/t to 2.56g/t gold and 8 ranged between 0.4g/t and 0.64g/t gold.
  • Over 50 stream sediment samples have returned greater than 100ppb gold values, including 18 with greater than 2,500ppb. More recent stream sampling in November 2004 detected visible gold and nearby rock float samples assayed up to 34.7g/t and 155ppm copper.

Other than an aeromagnetic survey flown in the late 1990’s little modern gold exploration has occurred over most of the project area.
